Testicular Implant is Perforated During Car Accident
This case involves a 37-year-old man who previously had a testicular implant placement following complications with a vasectomy. 9 months after the successful implantation, he was involved in a car accident while on his way to work. A few days after the car accident, the man began experiencing severe testicular pain and swelling. He presented to the emergency room where an ultrasound revealed perforation of the testicular implant with the leakage of the implant contents.
Question(s) For Expert Witness
1. How often do you perform testicular implants?
2. Can a motor vehicle accident cause testicular implant rupture?
3. Is it possible to have delayed swelling/ pain for a few days after rupture of a testicular implant secondary to a "slow leak"?
Expert Witness Response E-007170
I am a board-certified Urologist. I am also the Professor and Chief of the Division of Urology, and the Urology Residency Program Director at a large university hospital. I perform about 1-2 testicular implants per year. These are not common cases. Yes, a motor vehicle accident can cause testicular implant rupture if the impact of the crash involves the genital region. Delayed swelling and pain can occur after rupture of an implant due to slow leak.
