School Violence Expert Witness Opines on Inappropriate Sexual Contact Between Students
This case involves a child who was sexually molested by another child. The child in question had a history of inappropriate conduct at the school. It is alleged that the boy was not expelled from the program because the school had special relations with his family. Furthermore, this incident took place during a recess break in the boys’ bathroom. There was no direct adult supervision of the restroom area. While numerous complaints and records had been filed about the attacker, the school did nothing to ensure the adequate safety of other children in his presence.
Question(s) For Expert Witness
1) What are the long-term effects that could possibly manifest as this child develops?
Expert Witness Response E-000794
Sexual abuse is associated with an increased risk of future depression, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, and general maladjustment. Adolescents and adults abused as children are more likely to have marital problems, to be hospitalized for psychiatric problems, and to require psychiatric treatment. Even a single instance of abuse is associated with increased risks of this nature.
