Gynecologist Sued over Incorrectly Placed Essure Implant

An expert in gynecology was requested to testify in a case over Essure contraceptive IUDs, where one patient’s right fallopian tube had been punctured by the device. After experiencing bloating, chronic pain, depression, and hypertension in her shoulders shortly after the Essure device was implanted, the patient was diagnosed with an incorrectly fitted device. Instead of blocking her right fallopian tube, the small Essure coils had punctured it and migrated towards the uterine wall, causing the patient excessive pain and forcing her to undergo a hysterectomy before she turned thirty. The device’s effect called its manufacturing into question, and the perspective of a gynecologist was essential to assessing the validity of the patient’s claims.

I have been board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology for nearly twenty years and am very familiar with the Essure procedure, having placed the device in patients in the past. I no longer use the device for various reasons, and have previously had to remove a device from a patient due to chronic pain.
