He earned his BS in Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, an MS in computer science from the University of Colorado, Boulder and his PhD in intelligent systems programming from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a certified flight instructor and pilot, yet focuses his main work as a research psychologist analyzing the cognitive effects of distractions.
